Our Focus Areas
The Lawyers’ Committee for Rhode Island was created in response to government overreach that exceeds the law, grounded in the belief that lawyers have both the tools and the responsibility to act when people, organizations, and institutions are affected.
We identify and respond to legal issues affecting nonprofits, communities, and public institutions across Rhode Island. We focus on emerging risks, from federal funding disruptions to immigration, education, and civil rights issues, and organize our work through issue-specific working groups.
We stay in close communication with communities and organizations so we understand impacts as they occur and can respond quickly. We also work with national legal partners, including the ACLU and Democracy Forward, to ensure our efforts reflect current legal strategy.
Our work is carried out by trained volunteer attorneys alongside two full-time litigation attorneys who lead and coordinate the effort.
Nonprofit Protection and Federal Funding
When federal actions put funding and operations at risk, we work with nonprofits to respond quickly and protect their ability to serve their communities. When that funding is disrupted, delayed, or conditioned in ways that fall outside the law, the impact is immediate. We work directly with organizations to protect funding, address legal exposure, and keep services running without interruption.

Immigration and Community Protection
Immigration enforcement can create immediate legal risk for individuals and the organizations that support them. We provide guidance and training so communities understand their rights and can respond with clarity and support.

Education and Student Protections
Policy changes can affect students, school systems, and access to resources. We support efforts to maintain stable learning environments and ensure legal protections are in place for students and institutions.

Government Accountability and Policy
Government decisions shape how organizations operate, how funding is distributed, and how services are delivered. We work to challenge unlawful actions and support policies that provide consistent and lawful protections.
